Building A.L.L.
The Academy of Learning and Leadership was an idea fostered and developed by Dr. Camille Mortimore and Founding Council that became a reality on September 1, 2003. The Academy welcomed almost 80 new students and their families; they had been watching ALL’s new building being built throughout that spring and summer. Attached to LaVarnway Boys and Girls Club, the Academy spent its first two months in temporary classrooms in the Club. ALL’s first true home opened when we moved into the sparkling new facility on Halloween. The Academy began to increase its enrollment immediately, growing to 134 students by the end of its first year. As each year passed enrollment doubled along with faculty and staff. New developments were on the horizon and that planning would play out in January of 2007.
The community and parent and student satisfaction with the Academy of Learning and Leadership lead to the development and construction of the second building on the ALL campus. On January 25th, 2007, in front of the entire population of school children, faculty, staff, board, and neighbors, the Academy of Learning and Leadership broke ground with a ceremony of speeches, drumming, and procession, successfully starting the construction of its second building. This second phase of a planned three-phase took the Academy one step closer to its vision of bringing quality education to the children of zip code 53206.
